GM Recalls Pickups Over Child Restraint Flaw

It is not recommended to place the child safety seat in the center seat, because it is in the proximity of the air bag in the event of a crash.

General Motors is recalling their Canyon mid-sized truck and the Colorado, along with certain Isuzu i280 and i370 pickup trucks. The recall is an issue with the child-restraint equipment and the recall will involve 192,676 vehicles.

The GMC and Chevrolet models range between the years of 2004 and 2011, this includes the Isuzus that are that have a similar design. The Isuzu’s recall is for years between 2007 and 2008 with a bench seat that has the 60/40 split.

The reason for the recall is the top tether for the center-front seat position is not accessible as required by U.S. and Canadian safety standards.

Dealers will fix the issue by cutting a hole in the trim panel that is at present blocking access to the anchor.

General Motors stated that this will be done free of service not matter what the age or mileage is on the vehicle. This will also include the chain of ownership that will be ignored and the issue fixed by dealers.

GM is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, along with General Motors do not recommend using the front seat to place children. They do realize this is impossible in vehicles with no back seat and state a lack of the proper access to the top tether could result in injury or death to the child when the seat is improperly installed.

General Motors has stated when there is not a back seat in the vehicle and it is necessary to place a child seat, it should be put on the right side passenger seat where there is a top tether anchor accessible. It is not recommended to place the child safety seat in the center seat, because it is in the proximity of the air bag in the event of a crash.
