All About Asbetosis

Symptoms of this disease typically include a feeling of tightness in the chest, often accompanied by pain and difficulty breathing. Patients usually develop a cough and might spit up sputum tinged with blood. They become short of breath during exercise or while performing daily tasks and might lose weight from a loss of appetite or difficult swallowing. In some people, clubbing appears on the fingers, and nails become soft and deformed from a lack of oxygen-rich blood to the extremities.

What is Asbestosis?

I was wanting to get a different perspective on asbestos lawsuits from an attorney in another state. Goldberg & Osborne was kid enough to share this with my California audience. Take it away guys.

Asbestosis defines a lung disease directly linked to asbestos exposure. The disorder can appear 20 years or more after someone inhales these minute, carcinogenic particles. Asbestosis develops when scar tissue forms inside the lungs, leading to pain, trouble breathing, and other health problems.

Asbestos exposure causes this disease, which usually shows up after two decades or more in people who worked in construction, auto manufacturing, mining, or shipbuilding. Until 1975 when the use of asbestos was banned because of health risks, the material was used for insulation, brake pad linings, inside pipes, and to insulate ships because it resists salt water. Many materials inside homes, including drywall, floor tiles, and attic insulation contained asbestos.

Workers involved in renovating or demolishing older homes also probably faced exposure if proper safety equipment was not provided. Tearing out building materials that contain asbestos releases tiny fibers into the air where they are inhaled. The government requires strict abatement precautions in buildings constructed before the 1970s.

The severity of asbestosis depends upon the length of exposure and the number of fibers inhaled. Most cases of the disease are linked to amphibole fibers, which are tiny, sharp, brown or blue particles that invade air sacs inside the lung. Breathing problems develop as the body’s immune system tries to rid the lungs of foreign material. This causes scarring that makes it hard to inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. A patient’s heart must work harder, which often leads to heart failure.

Medical science has not found a cure for asbestosis. Doctors usually recommend medication to thin fluid that collects in the lungs and ease pain. Some patients find tapping on the chest helps break up fluid. Eventually, patients commonly need supplemental oxygen as the condition gets worse. Smoking can increase symptoms and the risk of developing the disorder.

Many people suffering from asbestosis develop mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Most mesothelioma patients die within a year after the disease is diagnosed. A higher risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also exists in patients with asbestosis. They face 10 times higher risk of lung cancer that people who haven’t been exposed to asbestos.

People who know they were exposed to asbestos should schedule frequent doctor visits where chest X-rays might catch the disease in the early stages. During a physical exam, doctors commonly hear a cracking sound through a stethoscope, which indicates fluid in the lungs. Tests for lung functioning can also be conducted annually. A lung biopsy represents the only way to confirm the presence of asbestos fibers in the lungs.

Maryland Officials to Decide on Crib Bumper Ban

Officials say the ban might seem excessive, however it is a way to make parents alert to the dangers that crib bumpers pose to children.

September 28, 2011 – Maryland officials are debating whether to ban defective baby crib bumpers as a believed health hazard for infants.
The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will announce their decision, after an earlier state advisory panel recommended the ban. They recommended the ban after examining a local a local case of a child asphyxiation that the state Chief Medical Examiner determined it was caused due to the baby crib bumper.

The decorative padded bumpers that attach to the rungs on the crib sides are something health experts have advised against using.  If the crib bumpers are banned Maryland will be the first state to stop the sale of these padded cushions that are attached to the sides of the crib. Recently Chicago was the first city to ban the sale of this decorative item, after a Chicago Tribune investigation. The investigation showed that there had been over two dozen cases of infant suffocations that involved crib bumpers and was not sufficiently investigated by federal regulators.

Officials say the ban might seem excessive, however it is a way to make parents alert to the dangers that crib bumpers pose to children. According to Maryland DHMH Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, parents seeing the cushioned decorative bumpers when choosing baby furniture, assume they are safe, even though pediatricians advise against their use. Heart Attack Risk Linked to Diabetes Drug Avandia

The report by the Senate Finance Committee condemned the Food and Drug Administration, saying they are the federal agency that regulates medications, along with food and tobacco, but ignored the safety concerns that were found by staff members. If you or a family member has been injured due to use of this drug please contact Ehline Law to discuss the claim.

Avandia is a diabetes drug that has been linked with heart attacks, during the last several years it has been linked with approximately 83,000 heart attacks. According to a government report that was released February 20,2010, GlaxoSmithKline is the manufacturer of Avandia and might have known the risks for years, but kept this information from the public.

The Senate report details from the February 20, 2010 report that were reported on CNN included:

  • July 2007 FDA scientists found Avandia was linked with about 83,000 heart attacks after the release of the drug to the market.
  • Had GlaxoSmithKline taken the risk of heart attack when the issue was first presented it is possible some heart attacks could have been avoided.
  • GlaxoSmithKline attempted to undermine derogatory information about Avandia. Executives attempted to intimidate independent physicians. They focused their strategies on minimizing the findings on Avandia and the link with increased cardiovascular risks.

They downplayed findings on a competing drug that may have reduced the cardiovascular risk.  One example of this that investigators found is knowledge that GlaxoSmithKline publically condemned findings of a verified outside study that confirmed the cardiovascular risk.

  • October 2008 two FDA officials sent a clear warning that there was evidence of Avandia causing an increased risk of heart attack or heart failure when compared to Pioglitazone, a rival drug. According to senators the trial is still underway and comparing the two drugs would be unethical.
